It’s hard to stick to much less get started on an exercise regime if you’re a a full-time mom or dad but it can be done. Fortunately, once you begin to look at things more creatively it turns out that a busy parents’ day offers up countless moments where you can sneak in a workout. You just need to know where to look. Here are just a few ideas for you to sneak in some of that all important exercise time that you may not have seen before.
Involve your children your workout routine With the alarming rate of childhood obesity, it’s incumbent upon all parents to ensure their entire family is keeping to a consistent exercise regime. Here’s one idea: Next time you send them out to play take the opportunity to play with them too. Don’t let your list of chores be an excuse not to get moving and take the time to play with your kids.
Another idea, especially if you have young children is getting into your workout gear just as soon as you get out of bed and vowing not to take them off until you’ve done your workout for the day. When you do this, you’re ready to squeeze in that workout time at the instant you find an opportunity – for example, when the children nod off for a nap or are watching “Yo-Gabba-Gabba”. By wearing your workout clothes, you’re constantly reminding yourself of the priority you’ve set for your exercise regime.
Now, the reality is that you won’t get in your entire exercise regime every day. Even on days where a full workout isn’t an option, there are simple ways to supplement your exercise regime without a full-on 30 minute cardio session. Here’s an idea: you can park in the back of the grocery store lot to add a few additional steps to your day. Even better, walk a little bit faster when you walk to and from the car. At-home parents can workout using small children by using little ones as free weights for pushups and leg-lifts. The children will treat it like an amusement park ride. Why not climb a few flights of stairs at those down moments when you’re waiting for laundry to dry or a pot to boil. Not matter how you slice it making your workouts a priority will not only help to keep you healthy it gives your children a healthy and positive example to follow for the rest of their lives.
